Physical and Occupational Rehabilitation
"We see incredible recoveries every day," notes Jennifer Pesce, director of rehabilitation. "Physical therapy can help in so many cases – from strokes to repetetive motion injuries and arthritis – to back pain." Advanced Training, Compassionate Care Physical manipulations allow therapists to mobilize joint capsules to regain accessory motion and increase range. Whirlpools and other hydrotherapies are often used to improve circulation. Whatever techniques or equipment are used, relieving pain is the top priority. Once a patient's pain is under control, therapists can concentrate on stretching and strengthening the injured area. Finally, therapists work to improve a patient's overall fitness level, often through aerobic exercise and by providing detailed recommendations to help the recovery continue at home. The Physical Therapy Department also offers outpatient speech therapy services and modified barium swallows for patients recovering from stroke and those experiencing speech or swallowing disorders. For patients who have completed their physical therapy treatments, but are not quite ready to join the gym, the department also offers a self-pay extended conditioning program. To learn more about physical therapy and whether you could benefit from it, talk with your physician or call Shore Memorial's physical therapy department at (609) 653-3512.
