Surgical Services
The surgical staff at Shore Memorial performs more than
10,000 inpatient, outpatient and same-day surgeries annually including
laparoscopic, laser, arthroscopic and microsurgery. Our surgeons
are supported by anesthesiologists, highly-skilled nurses and technicians,
and advanced technology. Shore's team of anesthesiologists
uses advanced techniques and equipment to administer up-to-date
general, regional and local anesthetics. Thirteen surgical suites,
teamed with an 18-bed recovery unit, offer the latest in technology
for each surgical patient.
Shore's specialized Pediatric Surgical Program eases the anxiety of
both patients and parents. This family-centered program provides pre-operative
teaching by child-life and pediatric nursing specialists for elective
surgery patients and their parents. A special child-friendly pediatric
surgical lounge enables parents to be present with their children during
sedation and again after surgery. Anesthesiologists provide the latest
clinical and comforting methods in administering anesthesia to children.

Arthroscopic Surgical Center
Shore Memorial opened the area’s first Arthroscopic Surgery Center in 1985,
introducing the first-of-its-kind Laminar Flow operating suite. Since then,
our program has grown to become one of the leading orthopedic same-day
surgery facilities in southern New Jersey. Each year our board-certified
orthopedic surgeons perform hundreds of arthroscopic procedures to repair
shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, including ligament
reconstruction and cartilage repairs typically available only at major
sports medicine centers.
Our “ultro flow” operating suite features a space-age air filtration system
providing a sterile environment for total joint replacement and other
orthopedic surgeries.

Mini-incision / Minimally-invasive Surgery
Orthopedic surgeons at Shore Memorial Hospital are highly skilled in the
latest techniques for hip and knee replacement procedures that enhance the
patient’s comfort and may reduce recovery time by reducing the size of the
surgical incision and the disruption of other supportive soft-tissue
structures.
Today, with advances in implant design and surgical technique,
Shore Memorial’s physicians are focusing on ways to help reduce recovery
time and improve comfort after the operation.
Hip Replacement Surgery
At Shore Memorial, the newest mini-incision technique for hip replacement
is not as disruptive to important muscles and tissues. The procedure is a
direct two-incision surgery. The surgeon makes small openings on the front
and rear of the thigh, instead of the traditional large incision that cuts
across large leg muscles and tissues.
Knee Replacement Surgery
With the most up-to-date minimally invasive total knee replacement, our
surgeons access the knee from an off-center position slightly to one side,
rather than the front. With the traditional approach, a large incision is
made down the front of the knee, affecting the quadriceps tissues of the
thigh. With the new procedure, our surgeons avoid trauma to the quadriceps
by using a mini incision, an opening significantly smaller than the size of
a traditional knee replacement incision.
As with any surgery, there are risks, results will vary. To find out if
one of these new procedures is right for you, talk with one of our
orthopedic surgeons. For information about physicians on staff at Shore
Memorial, visit the Physician Finder section.

Computer-assisted Surgery
Continuing to set the pace in our region for providing area residents with
the most up-to-date health care technology, Shore Memorial Hospital’s
board-certified surgeons are using the STEALTHNAVIGATOR(SM) Program for computer-assisted surgical (CAS) procedures. CAS has revolutionized
traditional surgical techniques by allowing surgeons to navigate through
the body using computer-generated three-dimensional (3D) images.
The STEALTHNAVIGATOR(SM) enables our surgeon to look inside a patient and see everything in precise, 3D detail — a lobe of the brain, the twisting passageway of nasal cavities, the structure of a vertebra.
Computer-assisted surgical procedures can be substantially less invasive,
assist surgeons in targeting a precise area and avoiding healthy tissue, as
well as allowing for smaller incisions and less tissue dissection, which
translates into speedier recoveries and better results for our patients.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Shore Memorial Hospital surgeons have undergone specialized training in laparascopic surgery for gallbladder, hernia repair and for some gynecological disorders. Surgeons use small incisions of less than one quarter inch and a miniature fiber-optic video camera during a laparoscopic procedure, thereby dramatically reducing trauma to the body and time spent recovering in the hospital.

Kidney Stone Treatment (Extracorporal ShockWave Lithotripsy)
Extracorporal ShockWave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is performed at Shore Memorial
Hospital in cooperation with the Mid Atlantic Stone Center, located
in Marlton, NJ. The ESWL staff from the stone center bring the ESWL
machine to SMH on the second Friday of every month. Patients who have
kidney stones requiring ESWL treatment may have their procedure scheduled
at SMH by their urologist.
The typical procedure lasts less than one hour. Usually, the patient
will have an X-ray before the procedure to confirm the location of the
kidney stone. The ESWL machine has motion picture x-ray called fluoroscopy
built into it, so the surgeon and ESWL technician can see the stone during
the treatment. An anesthesiologist provides sedation so that the patient
is comfortable throughout the procedure. After the doctor and ESWL technician
target the stone, the machine is programmed to deliver shocks at the
rate of up to two shocks per second. The total number of shocks and shock
intensity is determined by the surgeon and based upon the size and composition
of the stone(s). The shocks sound like the automatic starter (a loud
click) on a typical gas grill. A registered nurse is at the patient's
side throughout the procedure. After the ESWL procedure is completed,
the patient is taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where a
team of registered nurses monitors the patient until the patient is ready
to go home.
Some patients may require the placement of a drain tube (stent) from
the kidney to the urinary bladder either before or after the ESWL. The
stent assures that the kidney will properly drain until the stone fragments
pass and healing is well underway. Patients are encouraged to speak to
their doctor about ESWL, complications of ESWL treatment and other options
available for the treatment of kidney stones.
