X-ray schoolThe School of Radiologic Technology

Radiologic Technologists use X-rays to create images of the human body.  Radiologists, physicians specializing in the uses of ionizing radiation, interpret the images produced by Radiologic Technologists and diagnose medical injuries and disease processes based on the information from the images. Other titles used for Radiologic Technologists are X-ray Technologist and Radiographer.

Shore Memorial Hospital offers a full-time, 24-month hospital sponsored educational program in Radiologic Technology.  Through participation in classroom, laboratory and clinical activities, students are prepared to successfully begin a career as a Radiologic Technologist. 

The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Radiological Health.  At the completion of the program, graduates receive a Certificate of Program Completion and are eligible to apply for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Examination and for state licensure.

Shore Memorial Hospital, the sponsor of the educational program, is a fully accredited; not-for-profit, acute care community hospital located in Somers Point, N.J., 10 miles south of Atlantic City and across the bay from Ocean City, N.J. 

Program Mission and Goals

The mission of the School of Radiologic Technology is to provide a comprehensive and quality education in radiologic technology and to provide the community with competent and compassionate technologists.

The goals of the School of Radiologic Technology are to:

  • Provide the healthcare community with competent certified entry-level radiologic technologists
  • Provide the healthcare community with graduates who demonstrate the skills and knowledge to produce optimal radiographic images
  • Provide the healthcare community with graduates who have the ability to communicate effectively and provide high quality patient care in the healthcare environment
  • Provide the healthcare community with graduates who exercise radiation protection towards the patient, the healthcare team and the general public

Program Overview

  • The Shore Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology is a two-year educational program.
  • The program consists of four semesters and begins in July.
  • Students are involved in classroom or clinical education activities Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

  • To successfully complete the goals of the program, students participate in classroom activities, practice the skills learned in the classroom in a laboratory setting, and apply their knowledge in a clinical education setting. (View curriculum and course descriptions.)
  • Students are assigned to clinical education settings to participate in a variety of diagnostic imaging experiences.

Requirements for Applicants

  • Applicants must have successfully completed the following prerequisite
    college courses with a grade of "C" or above:
    • Anatomy and Physiology I
    • College Algebra (Basic, Intro or Intermediate courses do NOT count)
    • English Composition I
    • Introduction to Computers
    • Introduction to Psychology or Sociology
  • Applicants must be high school graduates or possess a GED.
  • Applicants are required to be at least 18 years of age by the first day of class.
  • Applicants must possess gross and fine motor skills, and speaking, reading and hearing capabilities.
  • Applicants, if chosen to participate in the program, will be scheduled for a physical examination and drug test.
  • Applicants, if chosen to participate in the program, will undergo a criminal background review.

Application Procedure

Applications for the Shore Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology are only accepted each year during open enrollment, January 2nd through March 31stAll applicant information must be received and on file by March 31st. If all documentation is not received by this date applicant is automatically disqualified for enrollment.

Application packets will only be mailed during the open enrollment period, Beginning in January, applicants may call the school, verify they have completed the prerequisite courses and then request an application packet.

  1. The completed Application for Admission
  2. A non-refundable Application Fee of $50 made payable to Shore Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology
  3. An Official high school transcript or GED
  4. Official college transcript(s)

  6. Technical Standards Form
  7. Tuition Payment Agreement Options Form
  8. Three completed Reference Letter Forms - References should be from an employer or someone who knows you in a professional or student capacity; no family members or friends.  The completed reference form must be in a sealed envelope with the signature of the individual over the sealed part of the envelope.
  9. A personal essay (typed and double-spaced). Select one of the following topics for the essay:
    • Describe an experience or an individual that has had a significant effect on your life.
    • Describe an experience that you had to overcome to succeed.
    • Describe the circumstances that led you to become interested in a career in diagnostic imaging.

Pre-Admission Test

Applicants with completed files will receive information scheduling them for the Program's Pre-Admission test. The test is administered at Shore Memorial Hospital.  The Program's Pre-Admission test is designed by the Psychological Services Bureau, Inc.  Information and a sampling of the Pre-Admission test contents for the PSB-Health Occupations Aptitude Examination may be found at this website.

Applicants are required to obtain a percentile score of 25 or higher in each of the five (5) categories on the Pre- Admission test.  Test results will be mailed to the applicant.

Interview

Applicants successfully completing the Program's pre-Admission test with a percentile score of 25 or higher in each of the five (5) test categories will be scheduled for an interview with the Program's Selection Committee. 

Program Acceptance

Acceptance to the Program is based on the results of the pre-admission test, academic transcripts, recommendations, essay and interview.  Applicants will receive notification of their status through the mail.  Accepted applicants will receive an Acceptance Agreement, a Tuition Agreement and information concerning a criminal background review.

Accepted applicants will be contacted and scheduled for a physical examination and drug test by the Shore Memorial Hospital Employee Health Department. 

The accepted applicant's ability to participate in the Program is contingent on the results of the drug test and the results of the criminal background review.

Tuition for the two year program is $9,000.00 payable in four installments.
Due upon acceptance to the program $2,250.00

Uniforms $75 (approx.)

Cost of transportation to and from clinical education settings is the student's responsibility.

Tuition Refund Policy

Students desiring to withdraw from the Program prior to beginning the first semester will be refunded the tuition paid less $400.00. 

Students attending the first semester of the Program, and choosing to withdraw, are entitled to a refund of 50% of the semester tuition, less $400.00 up until the completion of the third week of the first semester. 

Students withdrawing from either the second, third, or fourth semester of the Program are entitled to a refund of 50% of the semester tuition up until the completion of the third week of the semester.

Articulation Agreement

The Radiology School has an Articulation Agreement with  Widener University that will grant 51 Block Credits toward either an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree upon the successful completion of both the radiography program and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
