The Registered Dietitian (RD) is an interdisciplinary member of the health care team.
Providing nutritional guidance, the dietitian works collaboratively with the nursing staff and physicians to provide guidance to the patient, to educate the patient, and ensure that the nutritional needs of the patient are being met during and after hospitalization and throughout the management of a disease process.
For patients with chronic conditions, the dietitian may work with a patient over a long period of time either during treatment sessions, or may meet with the patient during outpatient counseling sessions. The dietitian also is responsible to evaluate patients and document findings in the patients medical record.
