Howard S. Stainton
The Stainton Society was formed in memory of Howard S. Stainton, Ocean City’s most famous businessman, philanthropist and supporter of Shore Memorial Hospital. Born in 1886, his eventual financial success was shared with the entire community. Committed to Shore’s continued growth and improvement, he contributed both his time (as an early Board of Trustees member) and wealth from the 1950s until his death in 1979. His generosity contributed to an Emergency Room expansion and new Medical-Surgical, Critical Care and Maternity additions. The Howard S. Stainton Pavilion, opened in 1976, houses nine operating suites, and same day surgery and patient rooms. Known for his acts of kindness and charity - Mr. Stainton never hesitated to share his wealth with individuals and organizations in need, including his own employees, St. Peter’s First Methodist Church and fire and rescue squads in Ocean City, to name a few. He was generous with both his wealth and volunteer hours, yet never sought the spotlight - no matter how big the project at hand.
