Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Take your life back!
Shore Memorial's comprehensive cardiac care program includes advanced diagnostic
capabilities and treatment options. Services include prevention, rehabilitation,
and education for those with coronary disease. Our Emergency Department
has the latest in clot-dissolving medications and life-saving treatment
for heart attack.
Shore Memorial also offers a non-invasive heart and lung testing center
featuring cardiac stress testing, holter monitoring and transeophageal echocardiography.
The Challenge
Recovering from a cardiac or pulmonary disorder that has
resulted in hospitalization can be both difficult and frightening. Patients
often must make dramatic lifestyle changes. Exercise routines, which are
essential to returning to healthy living, present challenges to those who
are afraid of doing anything physical after a cardiac or pulmonary episode.
Vital signs of electronically monitored patients in the program are regularly
checked by an exercise physiologist
The Solution
Shore
Memorial Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center goes
beyond caring for you when you’re ill. The Center’s highly trained
staff gives you control over your health. Bridging the gap between illness
and wellness, the program integrates exercise, education, and nutritional
and physical counseling. The program’s aim is to stop (or even reverse)
the progress of the disease and improve your quality of life, permitting
a return to your normal lifestyle as soon as possible.
Conditions
Some cardiac patients have experienced conditions like angina
or heart attack, or have undergone serious interventions including bypass
surgery and angioplasty. Pulmonary patients suffer from similarly acute or
chronic conditions, including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma,
and pulmonary and cystic fibrosis. Because these conditions are so serious,
you may not feel safe exercising on your own (This is not irrational – physicians
routinely advise against exercise due to the risk of reoccurrence).
Fortunately, the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center provides a safe environment
where you can begin to exert yourself physically again.
Exercise Safety Net
At
the start of the program, you’ll be given an evaluation (including
a stress test, if you’re a cardiac patient). The Center’s staff
then designs a customized workout program that will challenge you without
overwhelming you. As you exercise in the comfort of the Center’s modern
facility, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that you are
being electronically monitored for any sign of irregularity in oxygen
level, heart rhythm, blood pressure or other vital functions. Medical
treatment is seconds away for patients who may overexert themselves. A
staff of exercise physiologists and specialists not only supervises your
workouts, but provides positive reinforcement as well.
Thinking
Healthy
Aside from the physical elements of the program, emphasis is
also placed on the nutritional and psychological components of rehabilitation.
Your mental outlook may have suffered as a result of trauma. Our counseling
sessions will help restore your confidence and overcome your fear of
further illness. You’ll be given nutritional guidance, too – tips
on how to reduce your fat intake and cut down on calories.
Back to Normal
The average patient regimen calls for
60 to 90 minutes of supervised exercise three times per week for 10 to 12 weeks.
Once you’re showing
progress, you’ll be encouraged to move on and work out independently.
Our staff will even make arrangements with local health clubs to ensure
you have a place to train on your own once you’ve completed our
program.
