leading-edge
surgical services
Shore Memorial’s surgical team includes board-certified surgeons,
anesthesiologists and highly trained nurse specialists. Through a combination
of exemplary training, experience and access to the most advanced surgical
techniques, including laser assisted procedures, Shore’s surgical
team is better equipped than ever to remove cancer while minimizing damage
to healthy tissue.
Radiation oncology therapy
Radiation therapy is among the cancer team’s most effective means
to arrest and destroy cancer cells in the body. A sophisticated linear accelerator
is used to create a narrow beam of radiation that is carefully aimed to
destroy cancer cells while limiting the dose to healthy tissue. Shore’s
linear accelerator is located in the Cancer Center.
Before initiating radiation therapy, radiologists and imaging experts use other imaging
technologies to pinpoint the exact location of the cancer. Such techniques may
include traditional X-ray, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound and others. When radiation
therapy is required, CT simulation
will be completed to provide accurate treatment planning.
Shore Memorial’s CT and linear accelerator technology are the most
advanced available. The linear accelerator, located in the new Cancer Center,
is a Varian Clinic 21 EX, delivering precision-guided IMRT - Intensity-Modulated
Radiation Therapy, the most effective method to destroy cancer cells while
leaving normal tissue intact.
The Philips Large-Bore CT scanner and specialized software provide the
latest advances in pre-treatment 3-D simulation to maximize precision and
effectiveness of each radiation treatment.
B-mode Acquisition and Targeting System (BAT) - an external ultrasound device to localize organs for improved accuracy of radiation therapy.
Prostate Brachytherapy Program - radioactive "seed" placement into the prostate gland for the treatment of prostate cancer.
The Radiation Oncology Department is accredited by the American College
of Radiology. ACR Accreditation ensures that Shore’s program meets
the most current and stringent standards in staffing, equipment, quality
control and technical capability.
Chemotherapy
Shore Memorial’s Cancer Team includes nurses specially
trained in the administration of chemotherapy in a bright and comforting
area of the main hospital building.
